Building Bridges: A Partnership in Arts Education

St. Hugh of Grenoble School has received an Arts in Schools Grant award from the Prince Georgeπs County Arts Council. This grant award will help fund an exciting collaborative partnership in arts education with the Greenbelt Community Center. In this innovative new project, students in grades 1-8 will have a series of visits to the Greenbelt Community Center to participate in either a visual art or performing art class or project, with the goal that each grade will visit the center twice during the year.

Tentative opportunities include:

• Visiting an interactive exhibit celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Greenbelt Museum followed by 2 hands-on, artist-led workshops, possibly including printmaking projects inspired by the City's unique collection of public sculpture and woodcuts by New Deal artist Lenore Thomas.

• Visiting an exhibit of interactive sculpture by avant-garde musician and instrument builder Neil Feather followed by a hands-on workshop on building basic instruments.

• A hands-on, artist-led workshops to create a collaborative work of art for display at Greenbelt New Year ("First Night" celebration).

• Hands-on, artist-led workshops to create collaborative artwork for the City's environmental Green Man Festival, and/or learning May Pole dances for performance at the May 4 Artful Afternoon event.

We are excited to be able to offer St. Hugh School families increased access to the Greenbelt Community Center, its artists in residence, and its varied exhibits and programs.
