First Grade

First grade is a year of exciting changes for children. Here are some of the topics we cover during the first grade year:

Religion
Students learn about God and His love, heaven, and how to live as Christians.

Reading and Language Arts
Students understand basic features of words, see letter patterns and translate them into spoken language by using phonics, syllables, and word parts (-s, -ed, -ing).  They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading.

Students read and understand grade-level appropriate material.  They use a variety of comprehension strategies and skills to understand what they read   In addition to their regular school reading, students begin to read a variety of grade level appropriate classic and contemporary literature, rhymes, alphabet books, children=s magazines and dictionaries.

Students read and respond to a wide variety of children=s literature.  They identify and discuss the characters, main idea, plot and setting of stories that they read. Students begin to write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events and experiences.

Students write using Standard English conventions (print legibly , space letters, words and sentences appropriately; sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling ) appropriate to this grade level.

Math
Students learn number sense by counting objects, writing numbers in figures, group numbers in tens and ones, find number one more or one less than a given number, order numbers.  Students also learn about fractions.

Students learn how to add and subtract numbers. They relate word problems to number sentences and continue number patterns using addition.They learn about geometric shapes and develop a sense of space. They measure by comparing objects= length, weight, volume using standard and nonstandard objects. And, they use their solving and critical thinking skills to solve math problems.

Social Studies
Students learn about self, family and living in a community, people at work  Also they learn about our world, using maps to learn about the oceans and continents.

Science
Students learn about plants and animals and their habitats; earth science (weather and climate); forms of matter; and their bodies and how to have a heathy body.
