Fourth Grade
Mrs. Mary Nauman

The fourth grade students at St. Hugh’s school are striving to become self-motivated learners by participating in a strong academic, faith-filled curriculum.  Our Language Arts program enables students to strengthen their reading comprehension abilities and their writing skills by completing a novel unit on C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, reading short stories from a literature-based reading text, and editing sentences and paragraphs on a daily basis in their Oral Language Plus booklets. Students also learn to write informational pieces on books they have read and begin writing five paragraph expository essays. Cursive writing is reviewed and practiced.

In Mathematics, the students are challenged to learn how to solve five types of multi-step word problems that incorporate addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division presented in the Saxon series. Students frequently demonstrate their work on the chalkboard to explain how they achieved their answers.

In our study of Maryland History, the students compose their own journal to the New World pretending to be a gentleman investor, indentured servant, or missionary priest.  Following this writing adventure, the students travel to historic St. Mary’s City for a hands-on tour of our first capital.

Our Science classes include learning concepts from life, earth, and physical science.  Topics such as animal and plant adaptations, the water cycle, the solar system, and electromagnetism are taught through vocabulary enrichment, textbook summaries, and lab experiments.
