The fifth grade curriculum is engaging and challenging.  In religion class we study the Holy Mass and the sacraments, as well as a review of the commandments.

The first unit in reading the fifth graders read The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare.  This historical fiction piece depicts the struggles and relationships of settlers in the New World and the Native Americans.  This unit covers the same time period as those of the first units in American history.  The students complete the unit in history and reading by writing a report on a Native American tribe and making a Native American dwelling to display.  The students also use a traditional reader to further develop their reading skills.  The American history class covers the story of America to the 1850’s.  We culminate our study in American history with a field trip to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.

In math, students strengthen their basic skills in computation as well as learning to work with fractions, decimals, percents, basic geometry, time, and other areas of math.

The focus in English class is on writing and grammar.  We write essays, reports, letters, personal narrative pieces, and persuasive paragraphs.  We also study sentence structure, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns.

In our science classes the students study life science, earth science, and physical science.  The fifth graders will be prepared to accept the responsibilities of middle school.
