Kindergarten got off to a wonderful start this year! We have made new friends and learned the routine of our classroom. During the first part of the school year, we became experts at writing our names and being students at St. Hugh School. Our New Year’s resolution is to build on the skills we have learned, to help better prepare us for 1st grade.
In Language Arts, our major focus has been to develop our pre-reading skills by learning letter sounds, sight words, and reading our readers. We have learned how to copy into our journals and we will continue to practice our writing and listening skills. For the remainder of the year, we will work on reading and writing as well as story comprehension and basic grammar.
In Math, we have learned to identify the days of the week, months of the year, and the seasons. We have also practiced recognizing the colors, shapes, and numbers. As the year goes on, we will expand our math knowledge to include basic addition, subtraction, time, and money.
In Religion, we will continue to develop our knowledge of the saints, holy days, and prayers; as well as our understanding of God’s creation. We have also enjoyed many school masses with our 7th grade partners.
During Social Studies, we have discussed families and communities. During the second half of the school year, we will focus our attention on community helpers, the Earth, and the U.S. A.
During Science class, we have talked about the five senses, weather, and living and non-living things. Health and safety, plants and animals, and the life cycle will be topics of discussion throughout the rest of the year.
Last, but certainly not least, we had a great time on our trip to the pumpkin patch in October. We saw many animals and even took a hayride, picked a pumpkin, and watched piglet races! We want to thank all of our parents, especially our room mothers, for all their help with all we do and for helping to coordinate our classroom parties. We look forward to the rest of the year and the exciting times to come!
